Joshua Koo has created this canvas implementation of the Tenori-On made by Yamaha. The Tenori-On is a hand-held interface with a surface of 256 LED buttons that glow as you access different sounds and texturesover an infinitely repeating sequence of notes. Click or Drag to play and create music with shapes, lights, smokes and colors.

I use the the Sion Library for the audio, creating a JS to AS bridge to generate sounds. Howeveer, with the still-in-progress Mozilla Audio Data API, one can easily modify this program to run fully in javascript soon.

Good idea. Whole Tone Scales are an easy way out since random notes always sound OK. Have you considered implementing the Harmonic Table which is a hex grid? The horizontal row is the chromatic scale. The vertical the circle of fifths. The diagonal to the right is the augmented scale, the one left is the diminished scale. Triads are formed by three adjacent keys that meet at one hex vertex, these can be altered by adding an adjacent note. There are several ways to play scales. As a keyboard instrument one hand can play bass and upper voices. As a program, patterns for chords and their alterations could be given keystrokes, eg. click A-flat + F4 could generate flat-9th chord. The Patterns are easily defined and bound to key strokes.

it’s killing my processor – to be honest – flash implementation linked by YopSolo works much better.
