Shaw Young has created this impressive retro update of Manic Miner called Manic Spaceman. The game was created for a competition with his friends over who could create the best Manic Miner update within 8 weeks. Shaw created his entry using canvas.

As with all the retro classics, the game chucks you in at the deep end of the difficulty scale. Use the cursors to move left and right and the space bar to jump!

Cheers for the link! It is hard; I’ve tried to stay faithful to the original Manic Miner which was punch-your-screen-in-the-face hard! There’s a total of 5 levels, including a bonus “night mode” level (level 4 i think?) I’ve posted a bunch of articles (which i’m about half way through finishing!) on my blog detailing the code behind the game if anyones interested..

[+] Good JS + HTML5 + CSS code, and nice SF graphics, indeed.

[-] Bad gameplay (hence the artificial difficulty, shared with millions of amateur games), perhaps because of the large ’sprites’ and a weak collision detection.

In comparison, the original MM -though a ‘remake’ from the Atari 800-, with its perfect per-pixel controls, was coded in only 6 weeks by an almost genius/lazy teenager [Matthew Smith, you rock !]. It featured 4X more levels, great technical innovations, unique style‚Ķ
