Dive into HTML5 Canvas
Mark Pilgrim is currently writing a book on the joys of HTML 5 and how developers can “dive in” to the new features.
One of the first chapters to surface in Mark’s draft is all about canvas; explaining all about our favourite element and how to start using it. Everything is explained simply and therefore this tutorial is perfect for beginners.
The tutorial is a work in progress, so check back to see the whole chapter take shape. Dive in to HTML 5 will eventually be published by O’Reilly, but it will also remain online for free.

Mark Pilgrim has done a brilliant job with his “Dive into HTML5″; including the canvas tutorial. Even better, he’s allowing it to stay online for free. I’ve seen some sites that take the free tutorial, learn it, then want to charge people $9.95+ to take ‘their’ course on canvass. Their course offers nothing new to Mark’s tutorial. That’s just wrong in my opinion. Perhaps I am incorrect, but I believe if you get knowledge for free, then you should disperse and share that newly obtained knowledge for free.
Anyway, this is a great site with plenty of nice demo’s. Thanks for putting this site up and for leaving it free.
@Rich M
Have you received help yet? If not, could you be more specific on where you are stuck? Hopefully, being I am 4 months late on visiting this site, you have already solved your canvas problem.
